Iliyana Krapova ha studiato lingue classiche e inglese all'Università di Sofia "Sv. Kliment Ohridski" e ha conseguito il dottorato in Linguistica Generale e Comparata presso l'Università di Plovdiv “Paisij Hilendarski” nel 1996.
Carriera accademica Dal 2005 è Professore Associato presso l'Università Ca’ Foscari di Venezia, dove insegna Linguistica Slava e Linguistica Balcanica per studenti di laurea triennale e magistrale, oltre al bulgaro (come terza lingua). In precedenza, ha lavorato all'Università di Plovdiv, dove ha tenuto corsi di Linguistica, Greco Antico e Latino.
Attività didattiche e di ricerca Oltre ai corsi di laurea triennale e magistrale a Ca’ Foscari, Iliyana Krapova ha insegnato corsi presso l'Università del Massachusetts ad Amherst (1995), l'Università di Edimburgo (1997), l'Università di Olomouc (1997), l'Università Carolina di Praga (1999), l'Università di Trieste (2002-2004), l'Università di Capodistria (2007), l'Università di Bucarest (2009), l'Istituto per la Lingua Bulgara (2011), l'Università dell'Indiana (2012), l'Università di Nova Gorica (2022), l'Università di Plovdiv (2023). È stata borsista Fulbright presso il Dipartimento di Linguistica dell'Università del Massachusetts ad Amherst, USA (1994-1995); Research Fellow presso l'Istituto per Studi Avanzati nelle Discipline Umanistiche dell'Università di Edimburgo (1997); visiting scholar presso il Dipartimento di Linguistica dell'Università del Connecticut (2002) e visiting professor presso il Dipartimento di Linguistica dell'Università di Ottawa (2015).
Gli interessi scientifici di Iliyana Krapova includono la linguistica slava, la linguistica balcanica e in particolare la sintassi comparata delle lingue slave meridionali e balcaniche, la linguistica bulgara e la dialettologia bulgara e, più recentemente, le complesse relazioni tra strutture grammaticali, distribuzione areale e influenze di contatto che definiscono le aree linguistiche slave meridionali e balcaniche. Ha tenuto conferenze in oltre 20 università e istituzioni.

È membro dell'AIS (Associazione degli Slavisti Italiani), dell'AISSEE (Associazione Italiana Studi sul Sud-Est Europeo), della Commissione per la Linguistica Balcanica della Commissione Internazionale degli Slavisti (dal 2011). È inoltre membro del Comitato Editoriale della rivista "Studi Slavistici", la rivista ufficiale dell'Associazione Italiana degli Slavisti, membro del Comitato Scientifico Internazionale delle riviste "Bălgarski ezik", “Slavyanski dialozi” e "Ezik, interpretacii, koncepcii” edite dall'Università di Plovdiv “Paisij Hilendarski”. Attualmente è direttrice della rivista "Balcania et Slavia. Linguistic and studies" pubblicata da Edizioni Ca' Foscari.
