In the footsteps of Shackleton

Ca' Bottacin - Dorsoduro 3911, Calle Crosera

Speaker: Marco Taviani, Italian National Research Council (CNR), Bologna

Title: In the footsteps of Shackleton: from the Endurance adventure, to the 2022 discovery of the shipwreck at 3000 meters deep

Abstract:
“As a scientific leader, give me Scott; for swift and efficient polar travel, Amundsen; but when things are hopeless and there seems no way out, get down on your knees and pray for Shackleton”. A hundred years after the death of the legendary British polar explorer Ernest Shackleton, the wreck of his famed ship Endurance was finally discovered and filmed at 3000 meters depth.
Shackleton’s history took place at the sunset of the heroic age of Antarctic exploration to then face the havoc of the first world war, bearing different cultural and societal paradigms. Here is his history, from the early days up to his ultimate death in South Georgia.
