French wh interrogatives, negative intervention and Locality

Sala Sarpellon - Ca' Bembo

After establishing that wh in situ is as grammatical as moved wh in questions with long construal in French, prof. Shlonsky summarizes the results of recent collaborative research with Lena Baunaz (Université Côte d’Azur) and Giuliano Bocci (Università di Siena), which compares negation in the matrix and negation in the embedded clause in both in situ and ex-situ wh interrogatives.

a.              [CP wh…neg…[CP …<wh>…]]

b.              [CP …neg…[CP …wh…]]

c.               [CP wh… [CP … neg…<wh>…]]

d.              [CP … [CP … neg…wh…]]

He discusses how the theory of locality can account for the fact that negation in the matrix (a,b) leads to a more significant degradation in acceptability than negation in the embedded clause (c,d).
