Early Agriculture and Cooking Systems in China
Abstract: This seminar will review current evidence on two processes of agricultural origins in China, including rice domestication in the Lower Yangtze and millet domestication across northern China. Similarities between the regional cultures will then be considered in terms of cooking traditions and how these are fundamentally different from those associated with early farming in Western Asia, and how this has contributed to long term cultural distinctions between east and west Eurasia.
