Open admission subject to assessment of minimum requirements.
Quota reserved to non-EU students residing outside Italy: 5 seats, of which 2 is reserved for a Chinese student living in China, under the Marco Polo Project.

Admission requirements

Admission onto the Master’s Degree programme in History from the Middle Ages to Present requires:

  • specific curricula requirements, matured with the obtainment of a definite number of credits in certain disciplinary fields;
  • an adequate personal preparation;
  • understanding of English language at level B2: the list of certifications and cases of exemption are available on the Language requirements web page. 

Admission with international qualification

Applicants with international qualification must have obtained a bachelor’s degree that is the result of at least 3 years of study. The preliminary evaluation of the qualification is mandatory. Procedures and deadlines are available on the dedicated online platform.
International qualification will be evaluated by the designated teaching committee after the pre-evaluation procedure carried out on the online platform.

Course overview

The Master’s Degree Programme forms historians that, other than acquiring a specific understanding of the fundamental epistemologies of a historian’s practice, will ensure skills in the use of method of historical analysis and a general preparation on global history from the origins to now, specialising in medieval, modern and contemporary history in and outside of Europe, with a specialised understanding of society, culture, European institutions and the mediterranean world in its historical dimension. The degree programme provides a full mastery in the methodology of reading, analysis and exegesis of different types of literary documentary, archival, iconographic and monumental material, as well as an adequate understanding of the techniques of studies carried out in their original sources, whether individually or included in their global and transmissive context.

Examination assessment and graduation

The educational activities include classroom teaching, workshops and internships, in order to acquire wide-ranging skills that can be readily transferable into the world of work.
During the whole university career, the various skills and knowledge acquired by students will be assessed through written and oral examinations.
The final degree test consists of the writing of a thesis, as a result of original and sufficiently comprehensive research work, conducted through edited and/or inedited sources, on a topic of historical relevance. In the writing, students must demonstrate an aware and coherent fluency of the adopted critical methodology, must be able to acquire the necessary abilities for critical interpretation of sources and be able to project  a way of acquiring, carrying out, and presenting in written and oral form (in the course of a discussion) a thesis. The topic must be coherent with the candidate’s study; the work must be undertaken under the supervision of one or more supervisors, undergo revision by an assistant supervisor and will then be discussed in front of a commission composed of university professors and experts.

Occupational profiles

Master’s Degree students will be able to work in the fields of conservation of historic cultural heritage, whether as historians, archivists, librarians, museum curators for institutions placed as tutelage and evaluation of historic-documental, cultural, environmental, artistic (archives,  superintendence, museums etc) mastery: for public and private firms that conduct historical research; for companies, businesses and corporations that offer consulence and collaboration services for the recuperation of activities, traditions and local identities and/or for the study and fruition of patrimony and historic memory; for archives and private museum establishments or large businesses. In the field of specialised or general editing: in radio and television companies; in journalism and newspapers (traditional and via web); in the production of cultural programs in the fields of theatre, cinema, television, radio and multimedia; in the production of content for website and multimedia products; in educational and cultural publishing, with training activities and updates in historical culture aimed abroad, in public and private institutes and firms, and in the and the third sector, centers and cultural associations and foundations.
