Elif Batuman, born in New York in 1977, is an American writer and journalist. She received her doctorate in Comparative Literature from Stanford University and has been writing for “The New Yorker” since 2010. Her novel The Idiot (2017) was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and for the Women’s Prize for Fiction; like The Possessed (2010), it is a parody homage to Fyodor Dostoevsky. Her latest novel, Either/Or (2022), tells the story of Selin: like Batuman, Selin is the daughter of Turkish parents and in 1996 is lucky enough to attend Harvard University. The novel was selected as one of the best books of the year by numerous publications, including the “New York Times”, “Esquire”, and “The New Yorker”.
