Maaza Mengiste was born in Addis Ababa in 1975 and now lives in New York. She graduated in creative writing from New York University, where she teaches at present. In 2007, she was named 'New Literary Idol' by the "New York Magazine". Her Beneath the Lion's Gaze is a political novel set against the backdrop of the civil war in Ethiopia. Translated in numerous countries, it has become an international literary case. Her latest novel The Shadow King won the 2019 The Bridge Prize for fiction, was a finalist for the 2020 Booker Prize and was selected as one of the best books of the year by "The New York Times", "Npr", "Elle" and "Time".
