Admission requirements

To be admitted to this Master's Degree Programme students must possess a proper individual educational background and the minimum curricular requirements. A certified knowledge of English at minimum level B2 is also required.

Admission with international qualification

Applicants with international qualification must have obtained a bachelor’s degree that is the result of at least 3 years of study. The preliminary evaluation of the qualification is mandatory. Procedures and deadlines are available on the online platform Apply.

Course overview

The Master's Degree programme in Translation and Interpreting (TI) is designed to shape professionals with specific linguistic skills in the field of interpreting and translation, both specialised and literary, capable of using computer and multimedia techniques and tools. Studies in translation, understood not only as communication but also as a primary form of mediation, address the most diverse linguistic-literary and socio-cultural issues from a comparative, intercultural and inclusive perspective.

The course is divided into two distinct curricula:

  • Chinese-English-Italian Translation and Interpreting;
  • English-Spanish, English-Italian Sign Language (LIS), Spanish-Italian Sign Language (LIS) Specialised Translation.

However, the two curricula have some shared subjects and provide the possibility of choosing, to a certain extent, subjects from the other curriculum, in order to create mixed courses. The English-Spanish specialised translation curriculum also includes a course dedicated to Italian sign language and related interpretation and translation techniques.

The course is aimed at Bachelor graduates who are already proficient in Chinese language and culture or English/Spanish language and culture and Italian sign language, and wish to pursue the specific study of interpreting and translation techniques and the cultural subjects that form an essential foundation for them. The two curricula lead respectively to the career of interpreter/translator for the English-Chinese-Italian combination and to the career of specialised translator for the English-Spanish and English-Spanish-ILS combinations.

Examination assessment and graduation

Educational activities include classroom teaching, workshops and internships, in order to acquire wide-ranging skills that can be readily transferable into the world of work.
Knowledge gained by students will be assessed through written and oral exams during their entire university career.
The final exam consists in writing a thesis, which must possess the characters of originality, exhaustive documentation and scientific investigation and which will be discussed with a committee of university professors and experts.

Occupational profiles

Master's degree graduates may be employed as professional interpreters, translators (on a freelance basis or for translation agencies), officials in international companies and organizations. They may be also hired in the following sectors: cross-linguistic communication, editing, multimedia. They may carry out research and teaching activities in the field of linguistics and translation. Moreover, they may be employed as interpreters of Italian sign language or as linguistic mediators in schools, hospitals and other communities.
