Admission requirements

To be admitted to this Master's Degree Programme students must possess a proper individual educational background and the minimum curricular requirements. A certified knowledge of English at minimum level B2 is also required.

Admission with international qualification

Applicants with international qualification must have obtained a bachelor’s degree that is the result of at least 3 years of study. The preliminary evaluation of the qualification is mandatory. Procedures and deadlines are available on the online platform Apply.
International qualification will be evaluated by the designated teaching committee after the pre-evaluation procedure carried out on the online platform.

Course overview

The Master's Degree Programme offers four curricula: Chinese, Japanese, Arabic and South-East Asia.
Two Departments contribute to the teaching programme, each with its own scientific and contextual specificity: the Department of Asian and North African Studies and the Department of Economics.
In the Italian scenario, the LEISAAM Master's Degree Programme is unique in its kind: it combines socio-linguistic and historical-cultural knowledge with economic, legal, political and social knowledge, with an approach focused on the realities of today’s study areas. The programme enables students to acquire high language and communication skills, combined with a sound knowledge of current institutional and socio-economic realities in their area of specialisation.

In particular, the following topics are approached:

  • sectorial languages in the legal, political, economic, and social fields;
  • institutional systems and recent socio-economic transformations, captured in a historical perspective;
  • relations between national processes and the broader regional and global context;
  • research methods and tools, including computer science.

In addition to acquiring the methodologies proper to the individual disciplines, the student develops analytical and intercultural communication skills in different sectors. This makes them capable of carrying out multiple tasks in a flexible and autonomous manner in companies or organisations involved in exchanges between Italy and the countries studied. The course also provides punctual preparation in order to apply to second-level professional Master’s Degree Programme and PhD studies.
The educational objectives are guaranteed by carefully selected field and area specialists.

Examination assessment and graduation

Educational activities include classroom teaching, workshops and internships, in order to acquire wide-ranging skills that can be readily transferable into the world of work.
Knowledge gained by students will be assessed through written and oral exams during their entire university career.
The final exam consists in writing a thesis, which must possess the characters of originality, exhaustive documentation and scientific investigation and which will be discussed with a committee of university professors and experts.

Graduates will be able to work, with jobs of elevated responsibility, with financial businesses and institutions that are active in the Asian or Mediterranea African market; as high level officials in local, national and international public firms, in voluntary organisations and in international institutions and organisations operating in the sector of cooperation and development aid.

They may also carry out their professional activity and expertise through firms and institutions in the fields of economic, social and cultural integration; in the specialised journalism and technical and scientific publishing, in the economic and financial consulting and in the protection of immigrant languages.
