Open admission.
Quota reserved to non-EU students residing outside Italy: 10 seats, of which 3 are reserved for Chinese students living in China, under the Marco Polo Project.

Admission requirements

Admission to the course requires a high school diploma or other equivalent and approved qualification obtained abroad.
Students must possess adequate knowledge of basic mathematics, abstraction skills and methodological rigour and at least level B1 proficiency in English.
There are compulsory checks of possession of these requirements. The procedures for checking academic requirements are indicated in the Course Regulations, published on the university website, which establishes the additional learning requirements (OFAs) to be achieved in the first year of the course if the initial requirements are not met.

Admission with international qualification

Applicants with international qualification must have obtained a secondary school diploma after having completed at least 12 years of schooling. The preliminary evaluation of the qualification is mandatory. Procedures and deadlines are available on the online platform Apply.

Course overview

The Degree programme is designed to shape professionals with a strong interdisciplinary background and knowledge of processes, service management, production chains and plant engineering. This background knowledge is aligned with the standards required for the ecological transition, according to the new European consensus on environmental protection.

The first year provides basic skills, with a strong foundation in mathematics, physics and chemistry, followed by a more specialised second and third year, with subjects more specifically related to the environment, energy, ecology, chemical and process engineering, sustainable design and process life cycle analysis, environmental law, IT applied to the monitoring of production chains, and chemical and biochemical plant engineering.

The professional outlets are typical of junior engineers, pertaining to areas such as:

  • civil engineering;
  • environmental and land engineering;
  • safety engineering and civil, environmental and land protection.

The course is fully interdepartmental, leveraging expertise in the fields of environmental sciences, environmental engineering and computer sciences (Department of Environmental Sciences, Informatics and Statistics), industrial and green chemistry (Department of Molecular Sciences and Nanosystems) and environmental law (in collaboration with Department of Economics).

The course also benefits from the collaboration with the IUAV University of Venice to offer expertise in civil law.

The programme includes an internship, to be carried out in companies or laboratories in the sector. The internship will be preceded by a course on health and safety during teaching and research activities (included in the internship) and an English language course. The students will complete the experience by drafting and presenting an internship paper that is the product of the research work carried out at a university facility or outside the University.

Examination assessment and graduation

The educational activities include classroom teaching, workshops and internships, in order to acquire wide-ranging skills that can be readily transferable into the world of work.
During the whole university career, the various skills acquired will be assessed through written and oral examinations.

The final exam consists in the presentation of a report written by the student under the guidance of a supervisor on the research activity carried out during the internship.

It aims to verify the student's ability to apply the knowledge acquired during the course and his/her ability to  communicate important scientific information on a specific topic and in a defined time interval, using IT presentation tools.

The internship can be carried out within the University or outside, in an affiliated company. The tutor/supervisor is a professor of the University; external correlators are allowed.

Graduates in Environmental Engineering for the Ecological Transition are professionally trained in the sciences, techniques, and technologies of environmental and civil engineering. Due to the programme's strong emphasis on ecological transition issues, graduates address environmental challenges, transformation processes, and protection measures to ensure genuine sustainable development for environmental and territorial conservation. 

The degree programme allows access to the regulated profession of Junior Civil and Environmental Engineer upon passing the Italian State Examination for Engineers and subsequent registration with the Register of Engineers, Section B, Civil and Environmental Sector.  

Professional and employment opportunities provide extensive possibilities for roles in hydraulic, environmental, and civil engineering design. Therefore, graduates can seamlessly enter the job market in both the public and private sectors, including professional firms, consulting and design companies, manufacturing or service enterprises, corporations, operators, and concessionaires of infrastructure, networks, and services.

In these fields, they can contribute with a specialised profile as junior civil and environmental engineers in activities such as planning, design, production, rehabilitation and restoration, maintenance and management, and technical support for structures with economic, productive, and social functions. They may also engage in environmental and territorial monitoring and control systems, as well as the planning, design, implementation, and management of engineering works. Additionally, they may be responsible for operating water and other fluid networks, waste collection and treatment, environmental resource management, and assessing the environmental impact and compatibility of plans and projects. Graduates may also continue their studies in a second-level academic programme.
