Prof. Sara De Vido participates in "Maiden Tower: To Be a Woman", an international festival of contemporary art

In conjunction with the international festival of contemporary art “Maiden Tower: To Be a Woman”, which took place in Baku from from September 17 to 27, Ca’ Foscari professor Sara De Vido participated in a conference held at the Yarat Contemporary Art Space by talking about the question of equality between men and women in her daily work as an academic.

In the context of others who spoke about equality in the world of the arts, the professor’s contribution to the discussion added an interestingly different point of view and helped to expand the discussion to other themes and topics. Describing some of the projects she has worked on with the aim of supporting gender equality and recounting some of her own personal experiences, Prof. De Vido gave a sense of what it means “to be a woman” in the academic field of international law. As she explained, “It’s not easy”, and “there is a huge discrepancy between legal equality and substantive equality”.

On the occasion of the same Festival, Prof. De Vido also held a master class at Ca’ Foscari’s partner institution, ADA University, entitled “Gender Equality in the EU: Evolution and Future Perspectives”. Her lecture focused on current problems and concrete situations, offering a subtle perspective on the celebration of equality through the arts and the fight against gender discrimination, or, as Prof. De Vido calls it, the “gender crisis”.

Prof. De Vido is an expert of international law and human rights law, with a specific focus on women’s rights and violence against women and she holds the Chair of International Law at Ca’ Foscari. She is also affiliated with the Manchester International Law Centre (UK), where she is co-founder of WILNET, the Women in International Law Network.
