PInK - Promoting Innovation and Knowledge is Ca’ Foscari’s portal dedicated to technology and knowledge transfer between University research and businesses, institutions and the local territory. PInK has participated in the writing of the new European Code of Practice for the smart use of intellectual property, which includes topics such as the management of intangible assets, skills and training, awareness raising, and intellectual assets management with the industry and academia.

The code will support stakeholders in the management of issues related to intellectual property in the EU — by providing, for example, recommendations and practical examples on the co-property of results, skills development, evaluation, international projects, and so forth.

An optimal management of resources, in a broad sense, can increase the socio-economic impact of research results and innovative technologies. Moreover, optimal management speeds up the use of knowledge and offers a competitive advantage to people in Research & Innovation, a field which is constantly changing and is characterised by increasing international cooperation, as well as the values of Open Science and Open Innovation.

Together, Open Science and intellectual property management can have a great social and economic impact. This is why PInK is actively promoting collaboration between university research and local businesses.

The Director of PInK, Giovanna Berera, and the Coordinator of the Research Enhancement Unit, Erica Brandolino, collaborated for months with the Community of Practice, along with partners from the European Union. They worked in groups, focusing on the challenges that different international practices share. In particular, Erica Brandolino actively participated in the writing of the guidelines in the Code of Practice. She will be one of the four speakers who will present their work during the 4th ASTP-EU Forum | Autumn 2022 on 29 November.

The guidelines in the Code of Practice are divided into three sections. The first regards fundamental elements for the optimal management of intellectual property. The second involves a series of recommendations for an efficient management of ideas in joint and international research partnerships. The third includes a series of recommendations on how to bridge the gap between the creation of intellectual property and the market.

The European Commission will invite participants to collaborate again on a campaign for the dissemination of knowledge and the raising of awareness of the contents of the guidelines.

“Common directions in the field of intellectual property management in research facilitate the use of results, and at the same time allow stakeholders to appreciate their value and boost their impact,” says Erica Brandolino. “We have taken into account and examined various types of intangible property/assets, such as information, knowledge and inventions in the R&I ecosystem, to increase opportunities for value creation. Intellectual property must be considered in a broader sense — not only as industrial property — by encouraging collaboration between people involved in research and innovation.”

PInK is at the forefront in the promotion of knowledge transfer and activities that create value across the local territory.

The PInK team

The PInK team, which is coordinated by Professor Vladi Finotto, promotes innovation, intellectual property, and research outcomes. It participates in calls for funding and in international programmes that aim to build useful tools for the transfer of knowledge and the development of partnerships between universities and businesses. PInK’s projects include ‘Cultural Heritage 2.0: Business Model Evolution Program, Urban Goodcamp’ and ‘Time4UNIchange’, which promotes cultural change inside academic communities to facilitate a more proactive and collaborative approach with local businesses and communities.

One of the most recent projects promoted by PInK is Mosaico – Ca’ Foscari Innovation Network. It is an “innovation ecosystem” that consolidates the activities that Ca’ Foscari has already undertaken and develops new initiatives to promote cultural innovation by involving the university community, cultural institutions, as well as actors in the economic, manufacturing and professional sectors.

“By participating in the European workgroup, PInK was able to make the most of its experience in the management of relationships with external stakeholders, in the development of collaborative innovation projects, and in the writing of the development strategy of Ca’ Foscari’s innovation ecosystem, which follows the most recent European standards,” says Vladi Finotto. “Our team has gained insight into future changes in the European framework. This will allow us to reconsider the many collaborative innovation activities that the university, its community, business, public and cultural institutions are involved in, and to make them more effective and accessible.
