A newly developed unit at Palazzo Badoer in Venice will offer university students more classrooms and services, as a result of an agreement between Ca' Foscari University of Venice and ESU Venice, the Regional Body for Students’ financial aid and services.

The new unit, covering an area of 1,630 square metres and complete with a 500 square metre garden, will offer Venetian students new options for getting together for recreation, study and eating.

This development will deliver new areas for teaching and workshops and serve several functions, becoming available at certain times of the day for socialising or eating together. The new spaces will remain open until late, offering students a gathering place after classes.

An innovative and flexible system and a functional infrastructure will accommodate a lunch area equipped with both a canteen (at special student prices) and room for autonomous meals. The new unit will also be used to cook meals for the university hubs of San Giobbe and San Basilio.

The new facilities at Palazzo Badoer will be granted on loan to Ca' Foscari in exchange for office space for the ESU administration at Ca' Bottacin.

The new unit is scheduled to open in early 2025.

Rector Tiziana Lippiello says: "I am happy with this project, which is unprecedented in our city. The students and local community will have a place in the heart of the historic city centre, dedicated to learning and also to socialising and eating. This new social space meets our students’ demands and contributes to making their stay in the city more comfortable and Ca' Foscari more attractive, even outside our region. This project is part of a more comprehensive plan to support the right to an education, in line with the University's Strategic Plan. After allocating 3 million euros to supplement regional funding, we are pleased to announce this project which will also have an impact on the development of our university and the entire city. I would like to thank the President of ESU for enthusiastically embracing the project'.

President of ESU Venice, Piergiovanni Sorato, says: "Offering students a wider range of services has always been at the heart of our mission, and to do so in a prestigious location such as Palazzo Badoer makes us proud. Through dialogue and teamwork, we have accomplished a zero-cost operation that will meet the needs of many students, including commuters, who will benefit from this innovative infrastructure. The new unit will make the University of Venice even more attractive to the many young people who are willing to grow academically and invest in their future.”

As far as investments in the Badoer unit are concerned, building and management costs will be borne by ESU, while Ca' Foscari will be in charge of making all the teaching areas perfectly functional.
