Ice Memory torna sul Monte Rosa: salva la memoria del ghiacciaio del Lys

Operando per dieci giorni a 4.155 metri di quota, un team di scienziati italiani ha portato a termine con successo una missione per estrarre due campioni profondi oltre 100 metri dal ghiacciaio del Colle del Lys, sul massiccio del Monte Rosa.
La missione si è svolta nell’ambito del progetto internazionale Ice-Memory ed è stata coordinata dall’Istituto di scienze polari del Consiglio nazionale delle ricerche (Cnr-Isp), in collaborazione con Università Ca’ Foscari Venezia, Istituto di fisiologia clinica del Cnr, Istituto nazionale di geofisica e vulcanologia, Regione Autonoma Valle d’Aosta, Fondazione Montagna Sicura, Comune di Gressoney-La-Trinité, il Forte di Bard e le stazioni di soccorso alpino della Guardia di Finanza di Cervinia e Alagna.
Le attività sul Colle del Lys si inseriscono nel contesto delle spedizioni per lo studio e la conservazione dei ghiacciai italiani finanziate dal Ministero dell’Università e della Ricerca e dalla Fondazione Ice Memory.
Una delle due “carote di ghiaccio” estratte dai ricercatori sarà analizzata nei laboratori dell’Università Ca’ Foscari Venezia, l’altra sarà destinata alla ‘banca dei ghiacci’ che la Fondazione Ice Memory realizzerà in Antartide, presso la base italo-francese di Concordia. Qui, le future generazioni di scienziati potranno studiare la memoria climatica e ambientale del Monte Rosa, anche quando il ghiacciaio del Colle del Lys sarà estinto a causa del cambiamento climatico.

Il successo sul Colle del Lys completa uno sforzo logistico e scientifico iniziato nel 2021 con l’estrazione di altre due carote di ghiaccio dal Colle Gnifetti, capaci di raccontare 10mila anni di storia ambientale della regione.
"I ghiacciai alpini sono “a rischio estinzione” e ne siamo consapevoli. Vogliamo recuperare e preservare, per le future generazioni di scienziati, questi straordinari archivi del clima del nostro Pianeta prima che tutte le informazioni che contengono vadano completamente perdute", spiega Carlo Barbante, paleoclimatologo, direttore del Cnr-Isp, professore all'Università Ca' Foscari Venezia e vicepresidente della Ice Memory Foundation.
Il team di ricerca di nove scienziati provenienti dal Cnr-Isp e Cnr e dall’Università Ca’ Foscari Venezia ha raggiunto il punto scelto per la perforazione lo scorso 9 ottobre, installando il campo remoto e il sistema di carotaggio. Le operazioni hanno richiesto un'intensa settimana di lavoro a temperature di alcuni gradi sottozero (fino a -10°C).
“La perforazione è andata molto bene: siamo riusciti a lavorare in modo veloce e ad estrarre due carote di ghiaccio fino al bedrock, ovvero la superficie rocciosa che si trova sotto al ghiacciaio” afferma Jacopo Gabrieli, coordinatore di questa spedizione e glaciologo del Cnr-Isp.
“Le maggiori difficoltà hanno riguardato i primi 10 metri del carotaggio: una parte definita “firn”, ovvero uno strato di transizione tra neve e ghiaccio. In questi primi 10-15 metri abbiamo trovato parecchia acqua liquida, che si è infiltrata nei primi strati e ha reso più difficile operare con il carotiere. Questo ci porta a dire che, anche a queste quote, i cambiamenti climatici agiscono pesantemente sulla fusione dei nostri ghiacciai”.
Il ghiacciaio del Colle del Lys rappresenta uno straordinario libro da esplorare per conoscere nel dettaglio e ad altissima risoluzione l’evoluzione del clima negli ultimi 150-200 anni. Il sito è stato selezionato dopo accurati rilievi radar operati grazie alla collaborazione con Stefano Urbini, ricercatore Ingv.
La missione ha offerto anche una preziosa opportunità di ricerca sui parametri fisiologici del personale impegnato in quota. Lorenza Pratali e Simona Mrakic Sposta, ricercatrici dell’Istituto di fisiologia clinica del Cnr, hanno raccolto parametri fisiologici e misurato alcuni biomarkers per monitorare i ricercatori e valutare la presenza di male acuto di alta quota.
La spedizione nel suo complesso ha richiesto mesi di preparazione ed è stata possibile grazie al supporto logistico e operativo di Fondazione Montagna Sicura della Valle d’Aosta, delle stazioni di soccorso alpino della Guardia di Finanza di Alagna e di Cervinia e Forte di Bard.
La Fondazione Didier et Martine Primat, tra i donatori principali della Fondazione Ice Memory, commenta: “Di fronte al triste dato della scomparsa dei ghiacciai, la Fondazione Didier & Martine Primat sostiene dal 2018 la Ice Memory Foundation. Infatti, la sfida di salvaguardare i dati degli ambienti passati è cruciale per i decisori di domani, affinché possano agire positivamente per il clima. Questa operazione al Colle del Lys ci permetterà di trasmettere la memoria dei nostri ambienti alpini agli scienziati e alle generazioni future”.
Il progetto Ice Memory, riconosciuto dall'Unesco e coordinato dalla Ice Memory Foundation, è frutto di una collaborazione internazionale che vede l'Italia tra i capofila tramite il Consiglio nazionale delle ricerche e l'Università Ca' Foscari Venezia e alla quale partecipano l'Università Grenoble Alpes, Istituto Nazionale di Ricerca Francese per lo Sviluppo Sostenibile - IRD, il Cnrs, l'Istituto polare francese e l'Istituto Paul Scherrer in Svizzera, insieme al Programma nazionale per le ricerche in Antartide (Pnra), per quanto riguarda l'attività presso la stazione Concordia. 7. Data subjects rights and how to exercise them
As a data subject, you have the right to obtain from the University, in the cases provided for by the Regulation, access to your personal data, their rectification, integration, deletion, and restriction of processing, as well as the right to object to processing and withdraw consent (Articles 15 et seq. of the Regulation).

As a supplement to the information provided pursuant to Article 13 of Regulation (EU) 2016/679 (available at the following link: Information on the processing of personal data of the website users), the University informs users accessing its institutional pages on social media platforms (e.g., Facebook, Instagram) that it processes, in an anonymous and aggregated form, statistical data made available by the providers of these platforms. The University acts as a joint data controller with these providers, in accordance with the ruling C-210/16 of 5 June 2018 by the Court of Justice of the European Union.
Furthermore, the University processes personal data users provide through its social media pages strictly within the scope of its institutional purposes, solely to manage interactions with users such as comments, public posts, etc.
Lastly, the Website contains social media buttons—links that redirect users to the University’s accounts on the displayed social networks (e.g., Facebook, YouTube, X, and LinkedIn).
