Mestre: Toniolo Theatre and Vez Civic Library
Venice: Casa del Cinema - Videoteca Pasinetti
2 – 30 March 2017

For the occasion of the tenth Incroci di Civiltà - the international festival of literature, organized by Ca Foscari University of Venice in collaboration with the Municipality of Venice - a special edition of Verso Incontri, the traditional path approaching themes and authors of the festival, has been prepared, paying particular attention to the involvement of the community of Mestre.
Thanks to a synergy with the Cultural Sector and the Sector for Libraries and Photographic and Digital Archives of the Municipality of Venice, Verso Incroci will be divided into four events at the Toniolo Theatre and the Vez Civic Library, four occasions that start to reflect on the geographic areas or authors that will be present at the actual festival, taking place in Venice from 29th March to 1st April, with the program to be announced shortly.

Verso Incroci will work together with the prose programme at Toniolo Theatre , allowing the public to examine the central themes of two shows, in the typical key of Incroci di civiltà: bringing up central issues of the places and the people whose stories will be presented
This will be applied to the The Bastard of Istanbul, by Elif Shafak, presented by Serra Yilmaz and Giampiero Bellingeri, scholar of Turkish Language and Literature at Ca’ Foscari, at 6pm on Thursday 9th March; and in The Price by Arthur Miller, presented by Umberto Orsini and Francesca Bisutti, scholars of Anglo-American Language and Literature at Ca’ Foscari, at 6pm on Thursday 23rd March.
Both these performances, which are free while there are available seats, will be held in the foyer of the Toniolo Theatre.

The American Dream (or that which remains of it) is represented at the festival by the 2001 Pulitzer Prize winner Michael Chabon, and the great poet and singer-songwriter Eric Anderson. The Turkey of moral dilemmas is represented by Elif Shafak, a name of exceptional significance mentioned above.
Further in-depth analyses on two varied and complex literatures (Japanese and Indian-English) are added to the festival line-up, both represented  by notable writers who are translated and known all over the world.
The two encounters The (un)solved mystery of contemporary Japanese literature, presented by Caterina Mazza, Ca’ Foscari scholar, (Thursday 2nd March at 6pm) and Children and Grandchildren of Midnight: India in English Literature, presented by Shaul Bassi, English Literature scholar at Ca’ Foscari (Thursday 16th March at 6pm) will both be held at the VEZ Civic Library with free entry.

Furthermore, in the framework of the homage to Abbas Kiarostami in the Incroci di Civiltà programme, Verso Incroci has included a full range of the films by the late Iranian director in its program, shown at the Casa del Cinema - Videoteca Pasinetti. The complete calendar can be found at this link. For tickets to the shows, entry is reserved for CinemaPiù members.
