Research and Academic Activities

Research activity. In the years 2008-2010 she was co-director, as Italian leader, of the research project, “Characterization of archaeological stone artefacts of the late Neolithic Tisza culture with advanced technologies” in the frame of the Hungarian–Italian Intergovernmental Science & Technology Cooperation Program. In the years 2004-2007 she co-directed, as Italian leader, the research project, “Archaeometry of the first ceramic
pirotechnology in the Carpathian Basin” in the frame of the Hungarian–Italian Intergovernmental Science & Technology Cooperation Program.

She was responsible of the Research Project “MARMO” [MARBLE] “Metodologie di Analisi per la Ricerca sul Marmo preistoricO” [Methodologies of Analysis for Researching on prehistoric marBLE”] funded by the Tuscany Region and the Department of Civilizations and Forms of Knowledge of the University of Pisa (2020-2022).
She was awarded Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Balassi and Tempus Foundation scholarships since the past ten years to conduct research on the Neolithic of the Carpathian Basin at the Institute of Archaeology of the Academy of Science of Hungary (in 1993, 1995, 1997, 1998, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2011, 2012 and 2013, 2017, 2019, 2020, 2022).
She has carried out fieldwork research and excavations, mainly of prehistoric sites, in Southern and Northern Italy, Sardinia, Denmark, Hungary, Greece, Pakistan, Libya and the Sultanate of Oman. Her work has almost always been devoted to the study of the Neolithization and the evolution of the lithic technology and typology, raw material procurement and trade patterns between the Mesolithic and the Bronze Age, with particular attention to the employment of archaeometrical analyses.
Member of the Joint Rorhi Hills Project (Sindh-Pakistan) since 1993.
Member of the International IGCP/UNESCO 442 Project entitled “Raw materials of the Neolithic/Aeneolithic polished stone artefacts: their migration paths in Europe” and secretary of the Italian national working-group.

Reviewer and Referee. Starnini has been manuscript reviewer and referee for the following periodicals: Archaeometry, Proceedings the European Meeting on Ancient Ceramics, Atti dell'Associazione Italiana di Archeometria, Journal of Field Archaeology, Geoarchaeology, European Journal of Archaeology, Journal of Archaeological Science: Reports, Asia Anteriore Antica, Quaternary International, PLoS ONE and Journal of Archaeology and Anthropological Sciences. Starnini has taught undergraduate and graduate classes at University of Torino, Genova, Milano, Venezia and Pisa; she delivered lectures to Ph.D. students at University of Siena and Pisa; visiting lecturer at University of Budapest, Ankara, Beograd. Visiting Professor at University Petro Mohyla of Nikolayev (Ukraina) from 2009.

Training undergraduates and graduate students in archaeology, methodology, archaeometry and prehistory in the classroom and in the field. Starnini directed and co-directed excavations at many sites, among which the early Neolithic site of Isorella (BS, northern Italy), Middle Neolithic site of Bancole (MN, northern Italy), Sites 480 and 862 on the Rohri Hills (Sindh, Pakistan).
