Susana de Matos Viegas is an anthropologist and research professor at the Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Lisbon. She holds a PhD in Social and Cultural Anthropology from the University of Coimbra (2003). Her fieldwork among the indigenous Tupinambá de Olivença in Brazil led her to coordinate the anthropological report for the demarcation of indigenous land (1997-2009). Her research topics include personality, territorialities of indigenous peoples, ancestry and historicities in the Indigenous Atlantic. Since 2012, she has also been working among the Fataluku (Timor-Leste). She focuses on the diversity of ways of associating with land and landscape, currently incorporating the climate crisis and the revitalization of landscapes ruined by tree monocultures, connecting indigenous ways of dealing with land in Brazil and East Timor with situations in Portugal. Since 2022 she has been the editor-in-chief of Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America. Since 2024 she has also been the coordinator of the University of Lisbon team in the European project Marie-Currie Staff Exchange Entangling indigenous knolwdges in Universities. She is currently a visiting professor (March-May 2025) at the Faculty of Letters and Philosophy, Ca' Foscari University, Venice, where she teaches the course “Territorialità indigene e rigenerazione della vita”.
