Susanne FRANCO

Susanne Franco è Professore Associato di Discipline dello spettacolo (L-Art/05) e insegna Storia della danza, Storia del teatro e Storia della Performance.

È delegata del Rettore per le attività teatrali di Ateneo e delegata del Dipartimento di Filosofia e Beni Culturali per i rapporti con il CLA (Centro Linguistico di Ateneo).

Si è laureata (1995) e ha in seguito conseguito il Dottorato di Ricerca (2001) presso l’Università Sapienza Roma; è stata Research Associate presso il Department of Theater Arts dell’Università di California Santa Cruz (1999).

È stata ricercatore presso l’Università di Salerno (2008-2016) e ha insegnato presso la Facoltà di Design e Arti dell’Università IUAV di Venezia (2001-2011), presso l’Institut d’Études Théâtrales dell’Université La Sorbonne Nouvelle Paris III (2004-2005), e presso il Département des Arts de l’Université Côte d’Azur, (2005-2006). Per l’anno accademico 2016-17 è stata visting professor presso la Section Danse de l’Université Côte d’Azur.

I suoi interessi di ricerca e le sue pubblicazioni vertono sulla storia della danza e della performance, sulla metodologia della ricerca in danza, sulla storia del corpo, e sulle culture teatrali di area francese, tedesca e nord americana. Le sue pubblicazioni e traduzioni sono edite da Routledge, Oxford University Press, Cambridge University Press, Illinois University Press, Larousse, tanzscript, Utet Università, Il Mulino, Bulzoni, L’Epos, Treccani, Costa & Nolan. 

È ricercatore associato del CTEL (Centre Transdisciplinaire d’Epistémologie de la Littérature et des Arts vivants: Littérature, Musique, Théâtre, Danse) presso l’Université de l’Université Côte d’Azur. È stata borsista del Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (1997) e del Canadian Studies Faculty Research Award Program (2002) e membro del gruppo internazionale di ricerca “Coreografiar la historia europea: Cuerpo, política, identidad y género en la danza de la edad moderna y contemporánea” finanziato dal Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación spagnolo e coordinato dalla Universidad de Oviedo (2008-2011).

Attualmente coordina l’unità di Ca’ Foscari per il progetto di ricerca "Dancing Museums. The Democracy of Beings" (DM2 2018-2021), finanziato da EACEA (Call for Proposals EACEA 32/2017 and EACEA 35/2017) piattaforma Creative Europe sotto programma cultura, large scale

Dal 2019 è PI del progetto di ricerca "Memory in Motion. Re-Membering Dance History" (MNEMEDANCE 2019-2022), finanziato con fondi di Ateneo (Ca’ Foscari), bando SPIN2 (Supporting Principal INvestigators) (primo classificato in Ateneo)

È membro fondatore del Research Network for Dance Studies CoDa | Cultures of Dance sostenuto dal funded Research Foundation Flanders (FWO).

È stata socio fondatore di AIRDanza (Associazione Italiana per la Ricerca sulla Danza) di cui è stata membro del comitato direttivo (2001-2004); è membro del comitato scientifico della rivista “Danza & Ricerca” (Università di Bologna); "Mimesis Jounral. Scritture della performance" (Università di Torino); “Venezia Arti” (Università Ca’ Foscari Venezia); “The Journal for the Philosophy of Language, Mind and the Art” (Università Ca’ Foscari Venezia). È inoltre membro dell’advisory board della rivista “Dance Research Journal (Cambridge University Press) e del comitato internazionale della rivista “Recherches en danse” (organo dell’Association des Chercheurs en Danse, France).

Con Marina Nordera sta curando il volume The Oxford Handbook of Dance and Memory (in corso di pubblicazione)

In qualità di curatrice ha collaborato con la Fondazione Querini Stampalia (Venezia) e insieme a Roberto Casarotto è stata responsabile degli eventi di danza per l’Hangar Bicocca (Milano, 2009-2011). Attualmente collabora con Fondazione François Pinault - Palazzo Grassi per cui cura la serie di workshop e incontri “Muoviti Muoviti! Danza musica performance” pensata per diffondere la cultura di danza; collabora anche con Lavanderia a Vapore – Piemonte dal Vivo (Torino) per cui ha curato il progetto “Maratona Bausch” (2018) .

Susanne Franco is Associate Professor in Performing Arts (L-Art/05) and she teaches Dance History, Theater History, and Performance Studies.

She is the Rector's delegate for the Theatre activities and the delegate of the Department of Philosophy and Cultural Heritage for relations with the CLA (Centro Linguistico di Ateneo).

She was educated at the University of Rome Sapienza, where she graduated (1995) and where she earned her Ph.D. (2001), and at the Department of Theater Arts, University of California Santa Cruz, where she was Research Associate (1999). She was Assistant Professor at the University of Salerno (2008-2016), and she taught at the Faculty of Design and Arts, University IUAV of Venice (2001-2011), the University La Sorbonne Nouvelle Paris III (2004-2005) of Paris, and the Université Côte d’Azur, (2005-2006). In 2016-17 she was Visiting professor at the Section Danse, Université Côte d’Azur.

Her research interests and publications focus on dance and performance history, dance research methodology, body history, and French, German and North American theatrical cultures. Her essays and translations have been published by Routledge, Oxford University Press, Cambridge University Press, Illinois University Press, Larousse, tanzscript, Utet Università, Il Mulino, Bulzoni, L’Epos, Treccani, Costa & Nolan.

She has participaed to the international research group Coreografiar la historia europea: Cuerpo, política, identidad y género en la danza de la edad moderna y contemporánea, fundend by the Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación (Spain) and coordinated by the Universidad de Oviedo (2009-2011). She was the recipient of a grant of the Italian National Research Center CNR (1997) and of the Canadian Studies Faculty Research Award Program (2002).

Since 2019, she is PI of the international research project "Memory in Motion. She is a founding member of the Italian association of dance scholars, AIRdanza (Associazione Italiana per la Ricerca sulla Danza), for whose board she served between 2001 and 2004. She is a member of the International Advisory Board of the book series Postcolonial Matters/Materia Postcoloniale, (University of Naples “L’Orientale”), and of the journals “Danza & Ricerca” (University of Bologna); "Mimesis Journal. Scritture della performance" (University of Turin); “Venezia Arti” (Ca' Foscari University of Venice), and of “The Journal for the Philosophy of Language, Mind and the Art” (Ca’ Foscari University of Venice). She is also a member of the advisory board of the journal “Dance Research Journal (published by Cambridge University Press), and of the international board of the journal “Recherches en danse” (Association des Chercheurs en Danse, France).

As a curator, she has collaborated with the Querini Stampalia Foundation, and from 2009-2011 with Roberto Casarotto she has been responsible for the dance program at the Hangar Bicocca (Milano).
