‘Southeast Asian Literature II’ is an advanced course designed for second year undergraduate students focusing mainly on modern and contemporary writings from Thailand and Burma/Myanmar. Centred around selected thematical tropes, the course enters into a conversation with selected literature to better understand, contextualise, critically reflect and discuss contemporary issues of SEA. Further-more, the course contextualises and reflects literature as specific form of expres-sion against and in conversation with other more-than-textual forms such as film, visual arts, sound, etc.
By the conclusion of the course, students are expected to:
- be able to contextualise modern and contemporary literature of SEA across time and space;
- independently analyse literary texts (situatedness, literary style, themes, etc.);
- appreciate the value of thinking with literature as methodological-conceptual approach into theoretical interventions of multiple issues in Southeast Asia.
Students are expected to have successfully finished the ‘Southeast Asian Literature I’ or equivalent courses. This course will be held in English, fluency in English is required for successful participation.
