This course will explore Korean literature from the ancient to the pre-modern period, and trace the development of Korean literature. Students will learn the genres of Korean literature and its characteristics, and understand the historical/philosophical backgrounds.
- To question what is Korean literature
- To learn the history and development of Korean literature
- To learn the genres of Korean literature and their characteristics
- To understand the background of Korean literature
The course will be conducted in English
WEEK 1 - The origins: from orality to written text (chapter 2)
WEEK 2 - Silla period: literary production in Chinese and vernacular poetry (Hyangga)
(chapters 3/4)
WEEK 3 - Koryŏ period: poetry (chapter 5)
WEEK 4 - Koryŏ period: prose production (chapter 6)
WEEK 5 - Early Chosŏn : the Sijo and other poetry forms (chapters 7/8)
WEEK 6 - Early Chosŏn : the Kasa genre (chapter 9)
WEEK 7 - Late Chosŏn : the Sijo (chapter 10)
WEEK 8 - Late Chosŏn : the Kasa (chapter 11)
WEEK 9 - Chosŏn poetry an prose in Chinese (chapter 12/13)
WEEK 10 - Prose in vernacular of the Chosŏn period 1 (chapter 14)
WEEK 11 - Prose in vernacular of the Chosŏn period 2 (chapter 14)
WEEK 12 - P'ansori and mask theatre 1 (chapters 15/16)
WEEK 13 - Movie watching
