Abstract:
The Arctic is frequently conceptualized as a remote and inhospitable environment, predominantly valued for its contributions to scientific research, while its strategic significance remains underacknowledged. This presentation aims to challenge this conventional view by highlighting the critical strategic importance of the region. In the initial section, a historical context is established by tracing the geostrategic relevance of the Arctic. The analysis examines the region’s early involvement in interstate and maritime resource disputes and delineates its evolving role in shaping the power dynamics among states. Furthermore, the presentation provides an extensive review of the academic literature on Arctic security. It begins with a broad examination of the field of security studies, outlining its evolution through various theoretical frameworks and developmental phases. This scholarly overview lays the foundation for understanding the multifaceted dimensions of security
in the Arctic. The subsequent discussion advocates for a comprehensive approach to Arctic security—one that transcends traditional military and defense considerations to incorporate essential environmental, economic, and social dimensions. These aspects are critical for any robust and holistic analysis of the region, as they collectively inform the broader strategic discourse surrounding the Arctic.
