The social and technical construction of the mind

Aula 3, Rio Nuovo Calle Larga Ca’ Foscari, Dorsoduro 3861, Venezia

The social and technical construction of the mind: Lev Vygotsky's political psychology in the age of AI

This lecture situates Vygotsky’s cultural-historical theory within the context of the philosophy of mind and artificial intelligence, linking the cultural-historical method, the mediating role of signs and tools, the zone of proximal development, and the relationship between thought and language with contemporary theories of learning and cognition. It will discuss the contributions of Michael Tomasello on shared intentionality, Stanislas Dehaene on neuronal recycling, Lambros Malafouris on the concept of the enactive sign, Andy Clark’s darkened room thought experiment, Pascal Boyer on divination as a cognitive strategy, and Leonardo Impett’s provocations regarding Marxist artificial intelligence. Finally, it will analyze current proposals for “Vygotskian” agent-based models to assess how the Russian psychologist’s theories might provide examples for operationalization or, on the contrary, constitute a critique of computational models of the mind.
