Tavolette, identificazione e martirio: il condannato a morte di fronte alle immagini

Sala Giovanni Morelli, Palazzo Malcanton Marcorà (Dorsoduro 3484/D Venezia) e online (Zoom)

Can a crucifixion image on a tablet provide solace to a condemned man on the scaffold? Can a painted image play a 'narcotic-salvific' role in the execution's dramatization? The ritual of comforting the condemned involved priests displaying sacred images to prevent them from witnessing their impending fate, guiding them to envision salvation beyond earthly life. The intent was to encourage identification with the martyrdom image, such as that of Christ, fostering acceptance of their fate. The speaker, Valérie Hayaert, a classicist and historian, explores these aspects, discussing the potential impact of such devices in the public enactment of capital punishment.

Valérie Hayaert, a recipient of the EUI Alumni Prize, delves into mens emblematica, focusing on humanist lawyers' woodcut depictions of legal and theological themes. Her book, "Mens emblematica’ et humanisme juridique," explores this tradition of playful seriousness. Her subsequent work explores the aesthetics of justice from the early modern period to contemporary courthouses. She co-edited the "Journal Emblematica" from 2014 to 2018 and collaborated on "Allégories de Justice" with French judge Antoine Garapon. Hayaert's contributions extend to exhibitions in Belgium on images of justice.

The seminar, hosted at Sala Giovanni Morelli – Sede di Malcanton Marcorà, offers both physical and remote attendance via the Zoom platform: ZOOM LINK
