Translanguaging and creative arts: conceptualising collaborative creative practice

online

29 April 2025 (4.30-5.30 pm CET)Translanguaging and creative arts: conceptualising
collaborative creative practice

Jessica Bradley, University of Sheffield

The webinar is part of the International Webinar Series “Transformative Plurilingual Education through Museums and the Arts” organised by the MILE research group in collaboration with Laboratorio Itals and Laboratorio LaDiLS.

Abstract: Translanguaging, as one of multiple approaches to conceptualising dynamic multilingualism, has really ‘captured people’s imaginations’ (Li, 2018: 10). Beyond linguists researching language and multilingualism in formal educational settings, it has also been more and more explored within wider contexts and practices, including with visual arts and performance. Translanguaging has been a lens for exploring multilingual practices in the arts and has also been adopted as a conceptual starting point for multidisciplinary practice (Bradley et al., 2018). Translanguaging’s promise is partly in its expansion of how we view and understand the complexities of everyday multilingual communication in dynamic contexts (Baynham & Lee, 2019). And yet, constraints and limitations are always present (Santello, 2022). In this paper I consider translanguaging and creative inquiry in collaborative research with creative practitioners. I draw on examples from a range of research projects which explore group-based artistic journaling for mothers and birthing parents. I tell the story of this research, across and through multiple projects, and the diverse methodologies I have engaged with. I demonstrate the possibilities and limitations of translanguaging for exploring creative journaling as individual and collective practice and show a theoretical move which engages with a concept from memoir-writing, ‘je transpersonnel’ (Annie Ernaux, Bradley & Pöyhönon, 2024). In so doing, I describe creative inquiry as an orientation to research which is expansive and open to creativity and critically examine translanguaging as concept and catalyst in collaborative creative practice.
