Interview

1. Please provide a brief outline of your training and scientific activity.

Professor at Universidade Vale do Rio Doce -UNIVALE, in the Integrated Territorial Management
Program and a full professor at the State University of Santa Catarina-UDESC. PhD in Social Sciences
at Unicamp, in 2004 and a Masters in Anthropology at UFSC. in 1995. Post-Doctorate at ISCTE-
University of Lisbon and NEPO – Unicamp (2017). Cnpq productivity scholarship Level 2. I have
been researching Brazilian emigrants abroad with a focus on gender relations, transnational
families, social networks, Italian-Brazilian descendants in Italy. The current research project is
entitled “The migratory projects of Brazilians towards Europe in the 21st century: transnational
families, gender and Education”.

2. Please state your reasons for choosing Venice and the Department for your research and teaching
stay.

My interest in coming to Venice and Ca Foscari University is related to the fact that I have already
developed projects in partnership with Professor Luis Fernando Beneduzi and I intend to continue
this partnership in my current research project “The migratory projects of Brazilians towards
Europe in the 21st century: transnational families, gender and education”. The project aims to
understand how Brazilian emigrants who live in Italy and have children in the school system modify
their migratory projects, expanding temporal expectations by forming transnational families. In this
sense, analyze how children are included in school and how Portuguese is taught as a heritage
language, and how connections with Brazil are built. I consider the Linguistics and Comparative
Cultural Studies department to be the ideal place to exchange ideas and research experiences.
Furthermore, I will participate as a guest in the activities of professor Silvia Arend in the subject
Luso-Brazilian History, discussing aspects relating to migration policy and/i Brazilian migration in
the 20th century. I also intend to attend seminars and lectures that address issues relating to Latin
America, themes of my interest during my stay and eventually schedule a conversation with
colleagues on topics related to Gender and Migration to present my research questions

3. Have you ever had a research collaboration with the teaching staff of Department of Linguistics and
Comparative Cultural Studies in the past?

Yes, I have collaborated with professor Dr. Luis Fernando Beneduzi, since 2011, on research projects
funded by CNPq that resulted in books and articles published in journals. The articles have addressed
the themes of Italian-Brazilian migration and issues related to identity reconfigurations and the
processes of seeking Italian citizenship and its difficulties. We are currently in dialogue about my
current project which addresses the issue of transnational families and reconfigurations in migratory
projects, as well as issues of heritage language. These are topics that we have been discussing and for
which this period as a visiting scholar will be very important.
