"A phonological description of idiomatic compounds in Italia Sign Language (LIS)"

This seminar will examine lexical idioms in Italian Sign Language (LIS), presenting whether non-compositional compounds can be considered idiomatic. While conventional definitions suggest that idioms are formed of multiple words, sign languages may exhibit monorematic idioms. Using a phonological approach and the Prosodic Model (Brentari, 1998), during the seminar LIS idiomatic compounds will be analyzed, aiming to show that they are unified entities despite comprising two distinct signs. By combining qualitative analysis of naturalistic data with theoretical insights, this presentation seeks to demonstrate that idiomatic compounds in LIS are phonologically and morphologically unified entities, despite being composed of two distinct signs. This new classification contributes to a deeper understanding of the nature of fixed expressions and idioms (FEI) in LIS.

Pietro Rigo is currently a Ph.D. student in Language Science at Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, where he also obtained his B.A. and M.A. degrees. Recently, he spent a semester as a visiting Ph.D. student at Stony Brook University (NY). There, he had the opportunity to continue his research on Italian Sign Language (LIS) idioms and, at the same time, to broaden his knowledge and expertise in American Sign Language (ASL). Additionally, he joined a research group focused on studying the interplay between autism and sign language.
