International Convention: Adaptation, Revision, Re-Use: Modes and Legacies of Ruskin's Work

Aula B Ca' Bernardo - Ca’ Foscari

The first international conference organized by FoRS aims at gathering scholars in a variety of  fields in order to foster multi- and interdisciplinary dialogues on Ruskin’s work and its legacies. Contributions deal with the making of Ruskin’s texts and the way he adaptated a range of ‘heterogeneous’ materials to compose his books as types of “the inter-woven temper of his mind”.  Papers also foreground revision, revisitation and re-use as key traits of his work, considering the way discourse is reshaped and reframed through time to be adapted to different audiences, intentions, emotional states as well as to the changing environmental and social conditions and their effects on human perception. The function played by different genres and visual media (engravings, drawings, daguerreotypes, etc.) in the construction of his texts are also examined. Contributions on Ruskin’s legacies fruitfully account for the way thinkers, writers, artists have borrowed, reacted to, or rejected Ruskin’s views, places, ideas.
