Bidirectional Crosslinguistic Influence in Bilinguals: Evidence from Phonetics

Sala Conferenze - Palazzo Cosulich

One of the most important and interesting questions in the linguistic study of bilingualism is how much and in what ways the two languages an individual speaks affect each other. Phonetics is uniquely suitable for investigating these questions because of the gradient nature of phonetic representations and the relatively automatic and unconscious manner in which they are deployed in speech. Thus, investigating the acoustic-phonetic characteristics of bilingual speech and the properties of bilingual speech perception promises to provide an objective and nuanced picture of crosslinguistic interactions. In this talk, I will report findings from a number of studies examining crosslinguistic phonetic influence in bilinguals, focusing on a somewhat surprising and understudied observation that this influence is bidirectional. Even in late adult learners, a second language can and does affect the earlier acquired, first/native language. In the second part of the talk, I will discuss the initial results from more recent work that addresses the mechanisms making such a bidirectional influence possible.
