Claudio Annibali (University of Groningen) - The Labour Market and Health Effects of a Diabetes Warning: Evidence of Gender and Age Differences from the Lifelines Cohort Study

Abstract:

To promote early detection of diabetes and ameliorate the negative consequences of diabetes, some governments provide diabetes screenings. Diabetes screenings inform participants about their diabetes risk. We investigate whether an issued warning affects the individual’s employment status, potentially occurring through changes in health outcomes. Our analysis also explores such health effects, stratified by gender to account for differences in physiology and behaviours. Using a multidimensional regression discontinuity design, we investigate the short- and long-run effects of a diabetes risk warning issued by Lifelines, a Dutch cohort study that collected blood samples from more than 160, 000 participants. Warned women show higher employment levels in the short run while men experience lower long-run disability insurance take-up. Providing the first results for individuals under 40, both women and men benefit from a warning. Women experience a large employment gain in the short and long run while men are more likely to be employed and work more hours in the short run. Furthermore, we find evidence of a socioeconomic gradient in labour market terms only for men as college-educated ones experience an employment increase and mid-educated men work significantly more hours in the short run.
