Ontolagoon: developing a digital ontology of the fishing lexicon in the venetian lagoon
1 April 2025, 4PM CEST
Sala Mazzariol + Online

Abstract:
This presentation outlines the progress made in the development of Ontolagoon, a knowledge graph dedicated to the fishing lexicon of the venetian lagoon, which originated from a doctoral project focused on studying the dialects of Pellestrina and providing a comprehensive linguistic description. Ontolagoon represents a significant challenge in an era where languages and dialects are increasingly threatened by cultural standardization. The goal is to organize and make accessible the linguistic and cultural heritage of the fishermen of the Venetian Lagoon, following the example set by other poorly documented minority languages. The presentation will discuss the importance of fishing in linguistic studies and provide an overview of the process behind developing the knowledge graph, including the creation of the lexical database and the strategies employed for its implementation. The aim of this presentation is to describe the creation of a domain-specific digital ontology, highlight the results achieved so far, and emphasize the role of digital humanities in preserving cultural heritage, underscoring the importance of new technologies in the humanities field.

Jessica Puliero:
Jessica Puliero graduated with a bachelor's degree from Ca' Foscari University, with a thesis in Romance Philology focused on the edition and linguistic commentary of a travel itinerary to the Holy Land, a Venetian prose text from the 15th century. She continued her studies in Venice, achieving a master's degree in Philology and Italian Literature, with work on microsyntax analyzing the diachronic change of the negation cluster and subject clitic pronouns in Venetian dialects. Currently, she is a PhD candidate in Italian Studies at Ca' Foscari University, in co-tutorship with the University of Zurich, with a research project focused on the linguistic description of the dialect of Pellestrina, a small island in the lagoon area.
