Religion and Water across Mediterranean Frontiers in the First Millennium
13 May 2025 14:00 - Sala Morelli Malcanton Marcorà

This seminar will bring together members of the “Science, Society, and Environment in the First Millennium” (SSE1K) project to explore the multifaceted connections between religion and water in the Mediterranean world, focusing in particular on the Eastern Roman Empire and the Abbasid Caliphate. Key themes of discussion include legal frameworks for water resource management, ritual uses of water, and religious responses to environmental challenges such as droughts and floods. The seminar will also highlight how significant hydrological events were commemorated and invested with religious meaning.
By examining a range of textual, archaeological, and historical sources, participants aim to shed light on the ways water—an essential natural resource both in the premodern era and in our present day—shaped religious practices and identities. The ultimate goal is to present the ongoing work of the SSE1K project, demonstrating how water and religion intersect to influence social dynamics and cultural narratives across different regions and faith traditions in the first millennium.
