Fascist racial laws have recently been the subject of much debate in Italy, not only among historians but also on the part of institutions and media. However, this has not always been the case in the past. On the contrary, at times the public awareness of what happened in Italy against Jews starting in 1938 was actually quite low or distorted. It can thus be useful to retrace the main steps of the (still ongoing) journey towards public awareness of that crucial moment of Italian history. It can also be done by questioning how such evolution intertwined with television, the new mass-medium that became pivotal precisely during postwar decades. When did Italian State television start discussing racial laws? How was said phenomenon narrated to Italians by RAI’s documentaries? Did the interpretations of those events change through time? What kind of an impact may one presume that said representations had on the public debate and awareness? How did all of this relate with the historical investigations of the topic and with its literary and cinematographic narratives? While touching upon these wide issues, the seminar will also provide a brief preview on the ways that are being implemented to present the research findings to a general public, wider than the scholars’ community. By using the new digital media for the construction and the dissemination of a research in public history.

Le leggi razziali in tv: tra audiovisivo, storia e pubblico

Recenti ricorrenze ed avvenimenti – come la nomina di Liliana Segre a senatrice a vita - hanno portato una rinnovata attenzione sul tema delle leggi razziali, sul versante storiografico come su quello istituzionale e su quello mediatico. Ma la consapevolezza di quanto accaduto in Italia a partire dal 1938 a danno degli ebrei non è stata sempre così alta, in passato. Può essere utile, dunque, interrogarsi sul cammino di progressiva presa di coscienza di quel momento cruciale della nostra Storia - e su come tale percorso si sia intersecato (o meno) con il mezzo televisivo, divenuto centrale proprio dal Secondo Dopoguerra in poi. In che anni la televisione ha cominciato a parlare delle leggi razziali? Come è stato raccontato il fenomeno dai documentari della Rai? La modalità espressiva e le interpretazioni di quei fatti sono variate nel corso dei decenni? Che tipo di impatto si può ipotizzare che tali narrazioni televisive abbiano avuto sul dibattito e sulla consapevolezza pubblica di quello snodo? Come, infine, tutto ciò si intrecciava con le ricostruzioni storiografiche sul tema e con le sue narrazioni letterarie e cinematografiche? Nel toccare questi nodi, il seminario presenterà sinteticamente anche le modalità con le quali si può cercare di comunicarli a un pubblico più vasto di quello della comunità scientifica, utilizzando - nell’ambito di un progetto di ricerca e di public history - i nuovi media digitali.
