Daoism in Korean Art

Online

Nelly Georgieva-Russ
Associate professor, Korean Studies Dept., Higher School of Economics (St. Petersburg)

Abstract
Unlike Buddhism and Confucianism, the role of Daoism in shaping Korean visual culture is often bypassed in art historical studies, mainly because Daoism in Korea has not been developed into a full-fledged religious institution. However, knowledge of Daoist philosophy was indispensable, while methods of divination and body cultivation were widely practiced. The figure of the Daoist immortal, or hermit, holds particular importance in Korean culture, not only because it is closely related to native worship of mountain spirits, but also because it appeared as the alternative self of the Confucian scholar-official.
The lecture will look into various aspects of the influence of Daoism on Korean art, including Daoist motifs in funerary art of the Three Kingdoms, mirrors of the Goryeo dynasty, and figure painting of the Joseon period, exemplified by the genres of Sinseondo (paintings of immortals) and Gosa Inmulhwa (Paintings of Old Stories).
