The Scuola Superiore Meridionale (SSM) in Naples in partnership with the Università di Napoli Federico II invites applications for 5 fully funded scholarships (of which 2 are funded by the Next GenerationEU Program) in the PhD program in Global History and Governance for the academic year 2024-2025.

The Program:The PhD in Global History and Governance consists of an advanced course of study and research at the end of which the student defends a dissertation based on original and independent scientific work. The course offers an educational program based on a multidisciplinary approach centered on history and law, but it is open to contributions from other disciplines.

The Ph.D. program in Global History and Governance is aimed at highly motivated students with a solid personal background and multiple language skills.

The program focuses on the comparisons, connections, and processes of globalization that have characterized different areas of the planet between the 16th and 20th centuries. It does so by concentrating on the relational dimension of historical processes, legal regimes, and the organization of power; on the interconnections between economic, political, legal, cultural, and social factors; and on the circulation, exchange, and interconnection of ideas, persons, institutions, legal cultures, political models, concepts, rights, and goods on a global scale.

The selection will reward projects of the highest quality and feasibility, with preference given to those that insist on areas on which members of the college can offer world-class training and research preparation. These include, in particular: Ideas and practices of citizenship; the History of the Welfare State; History of rights; History of minorities and history of minority rights; History of migration; History of empires; States, wars, and violence in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries; History of slavery and forced labor; History of historiography; The idea of Europe and its history; Europe's legal heritage and its integration; International organizations; Administrative and private law in the global sphere; Global legal pluralism; Rule of law and democracy; Public and private powers as actors in global governance; General principles and methods of dispute resolution in the global arena; Comparative federalism.

Funding amount: Annual stipend of € 19,000.00; 50% increase of the scholarship for research abroad for up to 12 months; up to 20% of the scholarship in research funds per year; no tuition fees.

Admission requirements: Candidates must possess an MA/MS degree, an excellent command of English, and possibly a second language other than their mother tongue. They must present a personal statement, a research proposal on a subject relevant to the PhD program, and the review/discussion of a text that particularly inspired applicants in the choice to pursue their studies, as well as in the conception and writing of the proposal itself. Students are asked to register via the respective registration links above until seven days before the orientation. The orientations have been scheduled to accommodate different time zones and will cover the same content. Building on the strengths of both institutions, this jointly conducted, research-oriented English-language graduate program offers students access to an interdisciplinary field in the humanities and social sciences to study and research transcultural dynamics between and within Asia and Europe in a global context. The study program is situated at two partner institutions, the Graduate School of Letters (GSL) of Kyoto University and the Heidelberg Centre for Transcultural Studies (HCTS) of Heidelberg University. Students enrolled in the program begin their studies at one of these two partners, their home institution, but spend an equal amount of time at the other university. After two years of study and supervised by international faculty of both, the GSL and the HCTS, students submit a single master's thesis to receive a Master of Arts degree jointly awarded by both universities upon completion.

The transregional outlook of the JDTS is based on the perspective that cultures are not contained within ethnically closed, linguistically homogenous, and territorially bounded spheres. Instead, they are constituted through transformations and entanglements that follow from contacts and relationships between various agents, concepts, and institutions. Transcultural Studies combine methodological and theoretical approaches from a broad spectrum of humanities and social sciences disciplines.

The study program expands the regional and disciplinary competencies students have obtained in their Bachelor's degrees or another Master's degree. Students of the JD Transcultural Studies acquire empirical knowledge on historical and contemporary moments of exchange as well as on theories and methodologies to frame and analyze such processes. The JDTS is primarily designed to train its students for a successful career in international academia.

Ten students between both partners per year (five students enrolled at Heidelberg University as their home institution, five students enrolled at Kyoto University).

Two years (one year at the home institution and one year at the partner).

The orientation targets primarily BA students who will graduate by March 2025 but is also open to students in the earlier stages of their undergraduate studies.
