Interview
Please provide a brief outline of your training and scientific activity.
I hold a PhD from the University of California, Los Angeles. Currently, I am a full professor and the Director of the Interdepartmental Program in Film Studies at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. With a specialization in feminist film theory, women filmmakers, adaptation theory, aging studies, I have published over 100 articles in scholarly journals and authored, edited, or coedited 11 volumes, including Desenfocadas (Women out of Focus, Icaria 2014), which was recognized as "the most influential book of the decade" by the Spanish daily newspaper El Diario. In 2017, I was elected as an associate member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences of Spain. As a prolific video-essayist, my work has been featured in the Sight and Sound 'Best Video Essay' polls in both 2021 and 2022, demonstrating my commitment to exploring new modes of scholarly expression. Since 2011, I have been directing the GynoCine Project, a Digital Humanities initiative focused on highlighting women filmmakers from around the world. This project has allowed me to delve deeper into the experiences and perspectives of women in the film industry. More recently, I have joined the editorial team of [in]Transition, the Journal of Videographic Film & Moving Image Studies, further solidifying my dedication to the advancement of videographic criticism and the exploration of innovative approaches to film and moving image analysis.

Please state your reasons for choosing Venice and the Department for your research and teaching stay.
Choosing Ca’ Foscari and the Department of Linguistics and Comparative Cultural Studies for my research aligns perfectly with my academic goals and interests. I am particularly interested in continuing my collaboration with Prof. Enric Bou, one of the most prominent figures in my field. Additionally, the city's cultural significance, research opportunities, interdisciplinary collaboration, networking prospects, and unique teaching environment make it an ideal destination to further my academic pursuits. I am confident that my stay in Venice and engagement with the Department will be highly productive, intellectually stimulating, and contribute positively to my research and teaching endeavors.

Have you ever had a research collaboration with the teaching staff of the Department of Linguistics and Comparative Cultural Studies in the past?
Yes, I have collaborated with Prof. Enric Bou on several projects, including my participation at the conference on "La 'españolada' nel cinema spagnolo: Limiti e condizioni" that he organized in 2013 at Ca’ Foscari. More recently, we shared the same panel at the 2022 NACS conference, which I co-organized at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Outside the department, I have also collaborated with Prof. Miriam DeRosa, from the Department of Philosophy and Cultural Heritage at Ca’ Foscari. Additionally, I have published several works in Rassegna Iberistica.
