Junichi Hayashishita

Interview

1. Please provide a brief outline of your training and scientific activity.

I earned a PhD in Linguistics from the University of Southern California in 2004. I am currently a Senior Lecturer (the Associate Professor equivalent in the US system) in Japanese at the University of Otago, New Zealand. My research interests lie in linguistic theories pertaining to the speaker’s lexicon, syntax, semantics, and phonology. My particular interest is in describing the contribution of the computational system in the speaker's mind to sentence meaning and sound. I am currently leading a large-scale research project to study the Japanese lexicon, in which we describe the argument structure of each commonly utilized Japanese verb; see www.dondoushidon.org.

2. Please state your reasons for choosing Venice and the Department for your research and teaching stay.

Venice has a strong theoretical linguistics program.

3. Have you ever had a research collaboration with the teaching staff of Department of Linguistics and Comparative Cultural Studies in the past?

No.
