Sophie Osotimehin - Rethinking the Cleansing Effect of Recessions

Meeting Room 1, San Giobbe Economics Campus + online

Sophie Osotimehin (University of Quebec at Montreal) - Rethinking the Cleansing Effect of Recessions

Abstract:

Recessions are conventionally considered as times of cleansing as the least productive firms are driven out of the market. Does the relation between productivity and exit depend on the business cycle and the nature of the recession? In this paper, we use a comprehensive administrative dataset of Portuguese firms over 2004-2023 to answer these questions. We find evidence of heterogeneous cleansing between periods of GDP growth slowdowns and episodes of recessions: while there is no evidence of cleansing during the Great Recession or the Covid crisis, least productive firms tend to exit more during growth slowdowns.
