The 'Saba Project,' launched in 2021 at the initiative of the 'Attilio Hortis' Library in Trieste, aims to publish the digital version of the manuscript draft of Canzoniere 1919-1920 by Umberto Saba (1883-1957). This is a very valuable document because it is the very first version of Canzoniere that has come down to us and contains a significant number of authorial variants. The first challenge we faced was determining the most appropriate XML/TEI encoding model, as there is currently no specific TEI standard for genetic editions. The project gained significant momentum in 2023 when all the poetic texts of the collection were encoded, and, in parallel, work was done to develop a view dedicated to authorial philology within the EVT 3 software. Since September 2024, the genetic edition of Canzoniere 1919-1920 by Saba has been displayed at the Literary Museum (LETS) in Trieste on an interactive screen. This seminar aims to present, theoretically, the results of defining an encoding model for genetic editions that we believe is replicable and, practically, the underlying choices regarding the presentation of a philological project to a wide audience, along with its future implementations in the GLAM sector.

Speakers:

Marina Buzzoni is full professor of Germanic Philology and Linguistics at Ca' Foscari University of Venice. Her main research interests include digital philology, computer-assisted stemmatology, historical linguistics of the Germanic languages, and the theory and practice of translation. She has participated in numerous national and international research projects, holding leadership roles; she is currently the principal investigator of the PRIN 2022 PNRR Leges Langobardorum project, as well as co-principal investigator of the DEDM (Digital Marco Polo) and Saba (edition of the Canzoniere 1919-20 displayed at the LETS – Museum of Literature in Trieste) projects. She is part of Spoke 9 of the extended CHANGES partnership. She is the author of six monographs (two of which are co-authored), various scientific essays, and book chapters. She is the delegate of the rector and president of the University Library System. Since 2021, she has been the president of the Association for Humanities Computing and Digital Culture (AIUCD).

Roberto Rosselli Del Turco is associate professor at the University of Turin, Department of Humanities, where he teaches Germanic Philology and Digital Philology. He has published articles and books in the field of Anglo-Saxon language and literature studies, and Digital Humanities. He edited and translated into Italian the poetic text of the Battle of Maldon (Dell’Orso Editore, 2009) and is the editor of the Digital Vercelli Book, a project aimed at publishing an open access digital edition of this important manuscript; a first edition of the digital facsimile of the manuscript and selected texts is already available online. He is the author and principal investigator for the development of Edition Visualization Technology (EVT), a software tool created at the University of Pisa to visualize digital editions created based on the XML/TEI standard. He is also co-principal investigator of the PRIN PNRR Leges Langobardorum project and actively collaborates with numerous other digital edition projects.
