Nazi-Era Provenance Research: The relevance of Italy in a transnational perspective.

Modera: Simon Levis Sullam, professore di Storia Contemporanea Università Ca’ Foscari Venezia

Francesca Ragno is currently Full Professor of International Law at the Department of Political and Social Science of the University of Bologna and Global Professor of International Arbitration at New York University (Law-Abroad program in Paris). She was Fulbright Distinguished Chair at the University of Pittsburgh and Visiting Professor in various foreign universities, such as  Heidelberg and Paris Nanterre. Her research interests span the intersection between private international law and public international law, the access to justice in cross-border settings and the privatization of the judicial function in a transnational context. Over the years she developed a strong interest in Art law. When she was involved in a high-profile case related to a Nazi-looted painting (belonging to the Uffizi) she became passionate about the legal problems surrounding art restitution. She is Faculty in the Master Program in Art law of LUISS University and through her scholarship advocates an improvement of the legal framework governing the reconnection of Nazi-looted artwork to their rightful owners or their heirs.

Katharina Hüls-Valenti currently lectures on Provenance research at the Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz and is a Post-doc Fellow at the German Historical Institute in Rome with a research project on Jewish art collectors in Italy during the first half of the 20th century. She holds a PhD from the University of Mainz with a dissertation on German art acquisitions in Italy between 1938 and 1945 and was recipient of the 2023 Christie’s grant for Nazi-era Provenance Research for her research on the seizure and translocation of Jewish-owned cultural goods under the Italian Social Republic. Katharina is founding member of the Working group Italy of the Arbeitskreis Provenienzforschung e.V. and is actively involved in several projects that are committed to promoting and establishing the field of provenance research both in academia and in cultural institutions in Italy.
