Ulf Zölitz (University of Zurich) - Disconnecting Women: Gender Disparities in the Impact of Online Instruction

Abstract:
This paper examines gender disparities in the impact of online instruction. We randomly assign over 1,300 university students to different proportions of online and in-person lectures. Increased online instruction significantly reduces women’s course performance but leaves men unaffected. The negative effect on women is concentrated in math-intensive courses. Online instruction in these courses also disproportionally lowers women’s longer-term performance and likelihood of staying in their studies. Analyses of mechanisms suggest that women generally prefer in-person lectures and evaluate online lectures as less informative, interactive, and accessible. Our findings highlight that shifting toward online instruction is particularly harmful for women.
