Abstract

Dieter Roelstraete’s lecture When Art Talks About the Weather investigates some of the main topics of Everybody Talks About the Weather, a research exhibition presented by Fondazione Prada in Venice from 20 May to 26 November 2023. The project explores the semantics of weather in visual art, taking atmospheric conditions as a point of departure to deal with the emergency of climate crisis. The artistic dimension of the project is combined with an in-depth scientific perspective developed in collaboration with The New Institute Centre For Environmental Humanities (NICHE) at Ca’ Foscari University in Venice. As underlined by the exhibition’s curator Dieter Rolestraete: “Talking about the weather may well be the only way to sanely continue to talk about the climate without shutting down in understandable despair and inevitable despondency, because weather, in essence, is what happens to us.”
