Yugoslav Socialism „Flavoured with Sea, Flavoured with Salt”

Sala Media, Palazzo Cosulich - Dorsoduro 1405, Fondamenta Zattere, 30123 Venezia

Mediterranization of Yugoslav Popular Culture in the 1950s and 1960s under Italian Influence

A collective discovery of the sea in Socialist Yugoslavia was a result of various political, economic and social processes during the 1950s and 1960s, which were manifest on socio-cultural level through the emergence of mass tourism and new popular culture practices. Through three case studies – zabavna (light-entertainment popular) music, television, and fashion and lifestyles – this lecture will discuss the creation of the collective all-Yugoslav image of the Adriatic, shaped by consuming different audio-visual and material pop-cultural products. Finally, next to the fulfilment of a need for entertainment and leisure in the everyday life of socialist (wo)men, Mediterranization of Yugoslav cultural sphere also contributed to the international presentation of Yugoslavia as an always-sunny and modern Mediterranean country inhabited by happy and satisfied citizens.
