Multispecies Neolithisation
BETWEEN WEST ASIA AND EUROPE: INTRODUCING A NEW APPROACH

Abstract:
This presentation is focusing on the socio-cultural process associated with the Neolithisation starting in Europe around 6200-6000 calBC. Interdisciplinary research, bio-archaeological analyses and new fieldwork in the recent decade(s) resulted in the evidence of a new complexity related to the Neolithisation process between west Asia and Europe going far beyond our former models of diffusion versus migration. Active movement on different scales currently appears as the best-fitting and most probable explanation for the Neolithic expansion based on the scientific data, but it also challenges us with unsatisfying gaps and open questions when zooming into the details of the first farming communities on the continent. New data from own archaeological and interdisciplinary fieldwork in Turkey and Serbia will be presented by introducing the new approach of Multispecies Neolithisation to offer a new perspective for investigating early farming and herding communities and their social, cultural and economic developments.
