Admission requirements

To be admitted to this Master's Degree Programme students must possess a proper individual educational background and the minimum curricular requirements. A certified knowledge of English at minimum level B2 is also required.

Admission with international qualification

Applicants with international qualification must have obtained a bachelor’s degree that is the result of at least 3 years of study. The preliminary evaluation of the qualification is mandatory. Procedures and deadlines are available on the dedicated online platform.
International qualification will be evaluated by the designated teaching committee after the pre-evaluation procedure carried out on the online platform.

Course overview

The preservation and protection of the artistic heritage involves multiple sectors of institutions, society, and the economy; it is therefore important that specialised studies lead to an ever broader and deeper knowledge of artistic phenomena, which in this way can be understood and valued.

This Master's Degree Programme equips students with a thorough knowledge in the field of history of art and artistic techniques from the Middle Ages to the Contemporary Age. It produces experts in various sectors of artistic production or specific subject areas. Learning activities, frequently on a seminar basis, will lead to in-depth analysis of fundamental knowledge of these study areas and will be enriched by subjects that are not included in the corresponding Bachelor's Degree Programme.
Internships will be organized in cooperation with educational and cultural institution.

The quality of the course preparation makes it possible to fulfil high responsibility roles in the study and conservation, cataloguing, management, and valorisation of historical and artistic heritage, in the organisation and management of artistic and cultural exhibitions, and in the planning and implementation of cultural and educational activities.

Double and Joint Degree

Ca' Foscari University of Venice offers international educational programmes designed in collaboration with one or more partner universities, entailing the attendance of part of the study path abroad. At the conclusion of these programmes, selected students obtain a Double Degree (a diploma from Ca' Foscari and one issued by the partner university) or a Joint Degree (single degree jointly awarded by the member universities of the consortium delivering the programme), depending on the provisions of the agreements with the partner universities and the different national regulations.

Double and Joint Degrees available:

  • An agreement with the Université de Tours is active, under which the two universities will recognize to the selected students, at the conclusion of the studies, the double title of "Master’s Degree of arts in History of Arts and Conservation of Artistic Heritage" (Ca' Foscari University of Venice) and "Master 1 and 2  "Etudes italiennes et Histoire de l’art - (mention “Histoire de l’art” - University of Tours).

Examination assessment and graduation

Learning activities comprise taught courses, seminars, workshops and internships so that students can acquire a broad range of competencies that are transferable to the world of work.
Learning outcomes are continuously assessed by means of written and oral exams.
The final exam consists of a dissertation that must contain original research, documentation and exhaustive scientific analysis, and that must be defended before a committee made up of university professors and experts.

Occupational profiles

Master's degree graduates in Art History and Conservation of the Artistic Heritage may hold positions of high responsibility in public and private institutions in charge of study, classification, safeguarding, conservation, enhancement and management of the historical-artistic heritage (superintendences, museums, national and international bodies, foundations).
