Abstract:
Coastal landscapes hold habitats of high economic, social and ecological value on a worldwide scale. At the same time, they are among the most threatened ecosystems. These unique ecosystems are facing escalating anthropogenic pressures, chiefly from heavy coastal development, direct human uses, and rising sea level. Human activities in littoral areas are widespread and have been intensifying in the course of the twentieth century, causing disturbance of different ecosystems and severely limiting their natural resilience. Because of the scale of the problem, interdisciplinary and innovative approaches are required to address the conservation crisis facing the world’s sandy beaches and the marine ecosystems.
In the present seminar we propose, for the first time to the best of our knowledge in the Middle East, a quantitative investigation of the environmental functions and services in transitional ecosystems using a state of the art numerical models as well as in situ observations. The proposed methodology will support the assessment of the environmental status of transitional ecosystems recognized by recent international legislation. The obtained information will serve to perform a quantitative assessment of the ecosystem dynamics in the region.
