Women’s rights in Morocco: major achievements and pending challenges

Aula 1 Ca’ Dolfin, Calle Larga Ca’ Foscari, Dorsoduro 3825/D, Venezia

Prof.ssa Hakima Fassi Fihri,  International University of Rabat (IUR)

The conference’s purpose is to present the major legal reforms taken in the past decades in Morocco and those in progress now with regards to women’s rights and gender equality. Moroccan feminists have been struggling since the seventies for equal treatment by the laws towards all Moroccan citizens. Currently, Morocco is experiencing a very crucial period of its history, since an increasing portion of Moroccans are asking for gender equality, and are challenging laws on inheritance, abortion, and polygamy. One of the questions at stake in Morocco today is how to reach a balance, in the area of legal reforms, between people’s urge to fair/modern laws, and complying with islamic principles?

Hakima Fassi Fihri is a Moroccan scholar. She teaches Family Law in the School of Law at the International University of Rabat (IUR). She conducts research, publishes and teaches on women’s rights in Morocco, Moroccan Family Code readings, inheritance of women in Morocco, gender equality and women empowerment in Morocco and North Africa.
